C’est compliqué.

1- Bon, la langue de l’olympisme est le français. (Car nous les Français, nous avons inventé l’olympisme… après les Grecs c’est vrai, mais quand même.)

2- Mais c’est dans la langue de Shakespeare que Tony Estanguet, un champion de Canoë, s’est exprimé lorsqu’il a annoncé le slogan de la candidature de Paris aux JO 2024 : Made for sharing.

3- Tony avait prévenu depuis plusieurs mois, il disait : je vous préviens, nous devrons parler dans la langue de Shakespeare. Et à présent les internautes sont furieux, les internautes sont consternés : ils voulaient un slogan dans la langue de Molière. Qui est la langue de l’olympisme. Et nous voilà avec Shakespeare.

4- Pour les calmer, Tony dit aux internautes qu’ils ont raison : l’olympisme est français. L’olympisme est notre vision adorable de la mondialisation, où tous les pays s’affrontent gentiment en toute amitié. Nous en sommes tous fiers, vous, moi et le canoë. Mais justement la dernière fois en 2012, la candidature de la France a échoué, parce que la France ne partageait pas suffisamment l’héritage. La France disait un peu trop : l’olympisme c’est nous par ci, l’olympisme c’est nous par là. Ce qui est vrai, dit Tony aux internautes pour les calmer, mais ça a fini par agacer le jury. Tony y était, il a tout entendu.

5- Quand même, dit le canoë dans sa langue de canoë pour calmer à son tour les internautes, nous avons aussi décliné le slogan 2024 dans la langue de Molière : Venez partager. Molière n’aurait pas dit mieux.

6- En plus à chaque fois, dit Tony qui a plusieurs fois participé aux JO avec son canoë, à chaque fois au village olympique, c’est la langue de Nobel qui gagne, puisque  75% des athlètes du village olympique préfèrent aller voir si les draps sont plus doux dans le lit des relayeuses suédoises plutôt que de rester bien sagement dans leur chambre.

7- Alors qu’en plus, dit le canoë, Nobel n’est même pas un grand auteur, mais l’inventeur de la dynamite.

Canoe

It’s complicated.

1- OK, so the language of the Olympic movement is French. (Because we the French invented the Olympic movement…  fair enough, after the Greeks, but still.)

2- But it was the language of Shakespeare that canoe champion Tony Estanguet used when he announced the slogan for the 2024 Paris Olympics bid: Made for sharing.

3- Tony had been preparing the ground for several months, saying: I warn you, we’ll have to use the language of Shakespeare. And now, Internet users are furious, Internet users are appalled: they wanted a slogan in the language of Molière. Which is the language of the Olympic movement. And yet here we are with Shakespeare.

4- To calm them down, Tony told the Internet users that they were right: the Olympic movement is French. The Olympic movement is our very own charming vision of globalization, where all the different countries face off in a gentle friendly manner. We are all proud of this, you, me and the canoe. But the fact is that last time round,  in 2012, the French bid failed, because France was too possessive about the Olympic legacy. France insisted a bit too much that this aspect of the Olympic movement was all about us, and that part there? – also us. Which is true of course, said Tony to calm the Internet users down, but it ended up annoying the jury. Tony was there, he heard everything.

5- Nevertheless, says the canoe in its canoe language, trying to calm the Internet users down as well, we’ve also come up with a version of the slogan for 2024 in the language of Molière: Venez partager. Molière could not have put it better.

6- Moreover, every time, says Tony, who has taken part in the Olympic Games several times, every time it is the language of Nobel which prevails in the Olympic Village, since 75% of athletes in the Olympic Village prefer to go and see if the sheets are softer in the beds of the Swedish relay runners rather than stay in their own rooms and behave.

7- And moreover, says the canoe, Nobel is not even a great author, but the inventor of dynamite.

Je maîtrise si mal la langue anglaise que j’ai la sensation d’être un bébé, un bébé ralentisseur de conversations, un bébé qui ne peut exprimer que de pauvres idées simplistes et encore complètement de travers. Ceci dit, j’ai entendu de bonnes nouvelles au sujet des bébés. Il paraît que les bébés sont très serviables car, avant qu’on les abîme avec l’éducation, ils ont une immense capacité d’empathie. Si un bébé est en train de jouer sur un tapis tout doux avec des jouets merveilleux et si dans la même pièce que lui quelqu’un se trouve soudain en difficulté, ce bébé de mettons 14 mois, qui commence juste à marcher, ce bébé laissera en plan ses jouets et son doux tapis pour aller au secours de cette personne : il marche comme il peut, escalade les obstacles, puis il aide la personne. Il ne repartira vers ses merveilleux jouets que quand il sera sûr que tout est sous contrôle. C’est ce genre de bébé que j’aimerais être. J’aimerais escalader des obstacles pour me rendre auprès de personnes en détresses, des personnes qui tombent à cause de leurs problèmes avec d’autres langues, le japonais ou le serbo-croate.

Baby

I have such a poor command of English that I feel like a baby, a baby who slows conversations down, a baby who can only express pathetic simplistic ideas, and even then badly. That said, I have heard some good news about babies. It seems that babies are very helpful: before they are damaged by education they have a great capacity for empathy. If a baby is playing with wonderful toys on a very soft carpet and someone in the same room suddenly finds themselves in difficulty, this let’s say fourteen month old baby, who is just learning to walk, this baby will abandon its toys and its soft carpet in order to go to the aid of the person in distress: it walks as best it can, climbs over any obstacles, then helps the person. And it will not leave to go back to its wonderful toys until it is sure that everything is under control. That is the kind of baby I would like to be: I would like to climb over obstacles to help people in distress, people who stumble because of the problems they have with other languages, like Japanese or Serbo-Croat.

Helen, la propriétaire de l’appartement m’a dit : « Si vous entendez des bruits qui ont l’air d’être chez vous, ne vous inquiétez surtout pas, ça vient de chez le voisin. » Ainsi c’est pratique : aussitôt que j’entends des bruits inquiétants chez moi, des bruits qui en temps normal me terroriseraient et mettraient en branle mon imagination, je pense que cela vient de chez le voisin, et ça m’évite de m’inquiéter. On gagnerait à appliquer cette stratégie à toutes sortes de cas.

Logic

Helen, my landlady, told me: “If you hear noises that seem to be coming from inside your flat, whatever you do don’t worry: they’re coming from the neighbours.” This is convenient: as soon as I hear weird noises in my place, noises which would normally terrify me and set my imagination racing, I just think that it is all coming from the neighbours’ flat, and this saves me from worrying. We would benefit from applying this strategy to all kinds of cases.

Venant d’Auvergne, je suis toujours prodigieusement heureuse d’apercevoir la mer, comme si ma thyroïde en effervescence me remerciait de lui donner enfin l’iode nécessaire à un fonctionnement normal. Margaret-Anne qui m’emmenait vers la jetée, m’a relaté deux superstitions locales : 1- si tu passes la main à travers les trous du mur d’enceinte de la cathédrale, le diable s’empare de ta main et t’attire de l’autre côté 2- si tu commences à marcher sur la jetée, tu es obligé d’aller jusqu’au bout, sous peine de t’exposer à de grands malheurs. J’ai expliqué à Margaret-Anne que mon livre traite justement de la question du rationnel et de l’irrationnel. Venant d’Auvergne, je me suis toujours élevée contre les superstitions, j’ai adoré la philosophie des lumières, le livre de Pierre Bayle énumérant un à un tous les arguments possibles contre les croyances fantaisistes relatives aux comètes. Comme le vent était gelé au bord de la mer, Margaret-Anne m’a gentiment proposé de rebrousser chemin. La proposition m’a scandalisée, puisque nous étions censée, si j’avais bien compris, longer la jetée jusqu’au bout.

Pier

Coming as I do from the Auvergne, I am always overjoyed to see the sea, as if my hyperactive thyroid were thanking me for giving it enough iodine to function normally. Margaret-Anne, who was taking me to the pier, told me about two local superstitions. 1- if you pass your hand through the holes in perimeter wall of the cathedral, the Devil will grab your hand and pull you to the other side. 2- if you start walking on the pier, you have to walk all the way to the very end, or you may expose yourself to great misfortune. I explained to Margaret-Anne that my book in progress deals precisely with the question of the rational and the irrational. Coming from the Auvergne, I have always been opposed to superstitions. I loved Enlightenment philosophy, and Pierre Bayle’s book listing one by one all the possible arguments against various fanciful beliefs held about comets. As the wind by the sea was freezing, Margaret-Anne kindly suggested that we turn back. The suggestion scandalized me, as we were supposed, if I had understood correctly, to walk to the very end of the pier.

A l’aéroport London Heathrow, aussitôt passés les contrôles de sécurité, et avant les boutiques de luxe, il y a le magasin Harry Potter.

Juste après avoir vidé leurs poches, ôté puis renfilé ceinture et bottes, et été malmenés par les agents de sécurité particulièrement nerveux, des gens du monde entier aperçoivent le Harry Potter shop et son imaginaire, ils respirent et prononcent avec un sourire attendri les mots Harry Potter. Incroyable de créer un personnage littéraire pourvu d’une telle renommée, me suis-je dit en photographiant la boutique pleine de toiles d’araignées.

Un des motifs de la décoration sont les imitations de vieilles valises entassées à l’entrée et suspendues au plafond. J’ai pensé à mon propre personnage en cours, Wendy, une Voyageuse elle aussi : une Tsigane qui aimerait sauver l’Europe, aider les gadjé, et qui a pour cela deux ou trois bonnes idées, même si les gadjé ne lui facilitent pas toujours la tâche. Si elle y parvient, on ouvrira j’espère, dans le Brussels Airport, une boutique en l’honneur du peuple Rom.

Character

At London Heathrow, as soon as you have gone through security, and before the luxury goods shops, there is the Harry Potter shop.

Just after they have emptied their pockets, removed and put back their belt and boots, and been manhandled by particularly nervous security guards, people from across the globe catch sight of the Harry Potter shop and its fantasy world. They relax, and with a fond smile utter the words Harry Potter. How amazing to have created such a famous literary character, I thought, as I took photos of the shop full of cobwebs.

Featuring as part the décor are fake old suitcases piled up near the entrance and suspended from the ceiling. So I thought of Wendy, my own character currently in the making: a Traveller too, a Gypsy who would like to save Europe and help the Gadje, and who has two or three good ideas about how to go about it , even if the Gadje don’t make it easy for her. If she succeeds, I hope that a shop will be opened in Brussels Airport in honour of the Roma people.
