A writing workshop open to students of French (UG and PG). The chance to develop insights into the writing and creative process under the guidance of a published author.

Thursday 21st November, 1pm, French Institute, Edinburgh (Institut français d’Ecosse), Conversation littéraire.
A public conversation, led by Elise Hugueny-Léger, discussing Laurence Tardieu’s books and writing career. Public event open to all.

Thursday 21st November, 6pm, French Institute, Edinburgh, remise de prix du concours d’écriture.
Laurence Tardieu will take part in the awards ceremony of the creative writing competition organised by the Universities of Edinburgh, Edinburgh Napier and St Andrews.

Wednesday 27th November, 10am-11.30am, Writing the Self.
Laurence Tardieu will meet students on the module ‘Writing the Self in 20th and 21st century French Literature’, to discuss her text A la fin le silence.

Biography

Laurence Tardieu will be our resident writer from 10 to 30 November 2019.

She was born in Marseille in 1972. She has been writing since she was a child: for her, writing is an essential activity, not just an aspect of life but something that lies at its very heart, making it both possible and meaningful. In 1998, she decided she would devote herself to writing. That same year she discovered theatre and enrolled in a three-year drama course at the Conservatoire d’art dramatique in Paris, graduating in 2001. Her first novel, Comme un père, was published in 2002. For a few years, her activity as a writer ran alongside her theatre work, until, in 2006, she decided to devote herself entirely to writing.

The publication of her sixth novel, La Confusion des peines (2011), marked a turning point in her trajectory as a writer: for the first time, she was dealing with autobiographical material. This text was to have a profound effect, marking a break which led to changes in her writing and her reflections on literature. She next published a writing diary, L’écriture et la vie, which traces her attempt to ‘rediscover meaningful words’ after two years of being unable to write. It was this writing diary which allowed her to banish her fears and return to writing: her next work, Une Vie a soi, came out in 2014. À la fin le silence, a work born of two experiences of trauma and dispossession, one personal, the other collective, was published in 2016. Her most recent work, Nous aurons été vivants (2019) marks a joyful return to fiction.

Her writing is an attempt to strip down experiences and people to their very core: what is left of us when the masks are removed? For her writing is a quest, a quest with truth—our truth(s)—as its endpoint. Writing, above all else, experience. Thrilling experience, but risky too, grappling with life.

After having run a series of writing workshops at the Sorbonne Nouvelle and at Science Po, Tardieu has for the past four years been in charge of a writing course with the NRF (Nouvelle Revue Française) entitled ‘Les frontières de l’intime’.

She is the recipient of many prizes, including the prix Alain Fournier for Puisque rien ne dure.

Laurence Tardieu est née en 1972 à Marseille. L’écriture est là depuis l’enfance, nécessaire et évidente, non pas à côté de la vie mais dans la vie, prenant sa source en elle, la rendant possible tout en l’éclairant. Elle décide de se consacrer à l’écriture dès 1998. Elle découvre cette même année le théâtre, suit trois ans de formation au Conservatoire d’Art Dramatique du IX^ème arrondissement de Paris, en sort diplômée en 2001. Elle publie son premier livre, Comme un père, en 2002. Elle mène en parallèle pendant quelques années écriture et théâtre puis, à partir de 2006, se voue totalement à l’écriture.

Elle publie en 2011 son sixième roman, La Confusion des peines, qui marquera un tournant important dans son travail d’écrivain : pour la première fois, elle s’attelle à un matériau autobiographique. Elle n’en sortira pas indemne, mais cette rupture aura profondément fait évoluer son travail et sa réflexion littéraires. Elle publie ensuite un journal de création, L’Ecriture et la vie, cheminement qui retrace sa quête pour « retrouver des mots qui ont du sens », après deux années d’aridité. Ce journal lui permettra de chasser l’effroi et de retrouver le chemin de l’écriture : Une Vie à soi paraît en août 2014.

A la fin le silence, texte né du fracas de deux dépossessions, l’une intime, l’autre collective, a été publié en août 2016 aux Editions du Seuil puis, en janvier 2019, Nous aurons été vivants qui marque son retour, avec bonheur, à la fiction.

On peut lire tous ses textes comme des tentatives de mise à nu : que reste-t-il de nous lorsque les masques sont tombés ? L’écriture prenant la forme d’une quête, quête pour tenter de s’approcher au plus près d’une vérité, une vérité des êtres. L’écriture, avant tout, expérience. Expérience jubilatoire, risquée, en prise avec la vie.

Laurence Tardieu, après avoir dirigé un atelier d’écriture à La Sorbonne Nouvelle puis à Sciences Po, est responsable, depuis quatre ans, d’un des ateliers d’écriture de la NRF, intitulé : Les frontières de l’intime.
