I woke up this morning. Outside, fog had engulfed everything.
It was very beautiful. Fairylike.
The entire town had disappeared.
I was reminded of how my son had laughed, the first time he had seen fog, back in France. He had just woken up and looked out of the window. He stayed there for a few moments, stunned, then laughed with all his heart, as if it was a huge joke.
This morning, at my bedroom window, I heard his laugh erupt forth.
It reverberated around my bedroom.
Sudden joy.
There are no boundaries in our interior lives
We can be at once here and here
In the present and the past
With the living and the dead.
They brush past us with their quivering presence.
And we sometimes embrace them, and sometimes we push them away.
