Doctors

Saturday 11 February 2017

Doctors

When I’ve finished working, I watch Doctors, a strange soap, on BBC 1 Scotland. At first sight it tells the classic tale of life in a medical practice, Mill Health Centre, where various doctors work, including Dr Zara Carmichael, who turns heads wherever she goes, the young and enthusiastic Doctor Vere, the creative Dr Haskey, who is a bit of a glutton, and also pretty Ayesha in her light blue nurse’s blouse, etc. What I cannot understand is why most of the storylines revolve around books, literature, Shakespeare’s sonnets. Doctors is a medical soap in which books are important: books can cure us, carving out literary interventions. When I’ve finished writing and I watch Doctors while I have my lunch, I feel as though Scotland has presented me with this soap out of sheer kindness, to make me feel welcome. Or maybe it is my monomaniacal mind that is inventing Doctors, day by day.
