Writer in Residence with an Instagram state of mind

My name is Thomas Meinecke. I live in a little village south of Munich in the Bavarian foothills of the Alps. I’m a novelist, a musician and a non-musician, a radio and club DJ. I’d like to use my four-week stay as Writer in Residence at the University of St Andrews to develop an exchange (which was already in full swing from the off) with the researchers and students here, as well as (and linked with this) working on writing my current novel. This blog will accompany my residency, and I have been thinking about what form it should take. It oughtn’t to overlap with my next novel (but should nonetheless illustrate the conditions under which it takes shape over a specific period), and nor can I use this public space to write my private diary (something I’ve been doing since 1972, on paper and strictly between me and myself), and yet I want to allow myself to develop, personally as well, a sort of Instagram state of mind, which in the past I have always avoided, as someone who publicises his activities on Facebook, as I like to draw on texts and links to sounds and moving images. Here, then, I would like to concentrate on the medium of images for a change and set a few English sentences alongside each. The German translations are by Tom Smith, whom I met last year at a conference in Warwick, and to whom I an indebted for the invitation here to his university.
