Axe

Yes, I’ve noticed, there are plays on words in some of these texts, not that many, but a few. That’s unfortunate. It’s important to note that these are completely unintentional. I am of course against word play in literature: word play subjugates meaning to the coincidental similarity of sounds, and the last thing we want is a subjugated meaning, we would very much like a vigorous meaning on top form. But that’s how it goes, sometimes you try to do the right thing and the opposite happens. Like when the Bolsheviks had the idea of installing very good canteens in factories to prove that the Russian revolution was a good thing, but for all their good intentions they ended up with not-so-convincing canteens, actually quite dreadful canteens with rats in the soup; and sometimes the canteen was apparently so filthy that you had to break the dirt crust with an axe. It is hard to imagine what that means: cleaning the kitchen with an axe. So a few unintentional plays on words here and there, sniggering idiotically amidst the chaos of history, maybe isn’t such a big deal.
